William Robert Nicholls was born in Ixworth on 30th December 1897 (Thingoe Q1-1898 4A:826), son of William and Ellen NICHOLLS (née LUMLEY).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Troston Road, Ixworth with his father William NICHOLS [28] horse man on farm; his mother Ellen [24]; brother Frederick [8 months]. All were born in Ixworth.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 27 Summerpit, Elveden with his parents, brothers Frederick and James [6] born Elveden; sisters Jessie [8] born Ixworth, Nellie [4] and Ivy [1] both born Elveden.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
Dying of his wounds and his Army service records not being found, it cannot be said exactly where or when he was wounded. He died at No.46 Casualty Clearing Station, Proven.



William Nicholls is buried in Medinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium, grave 2:F:62
and also on the Weather Heath Memorial (Elveden Column by the A11)
